What is a Dermaplaning Facial?

Dermaplaning is a safe and highly effective physical exfoliation procedure designed to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells along with facial hair and dirt buildup. The results are a smoother and brighter complexion. The procedure is quick and offers the benefits of an exfoliation without the downtime. This is a perfect treatment option for pregnant women or those with sensitive skin, as you don't have to worry about any contact with harsh chemicals.

As we age, our skin's cellular turnover rate slows down. This is the cause of build up and dull looking skin. A dermaplaning treatment improves the look of fine lines and wrinkles, fades any dark/acne scars and allows for better product penetration. It also helps improve the penetration of skincare products and preps the skin for additional procedures like lasers and peels. Your Vitamin C will actually work a lot better! It is also wonderful for laser treatments as it increases your bang for your buck by removing the cells blocking the laser energy.

A common misconception is that this treatment will cause your hair to grow back thicker and with a five o'clock shadow appearance. Truth is, the hair on your face is very different from the rest of the hair on your body in that it is far finer and lighter in coloration. Dermaplaning will not make the hair coarse or darker.

Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types except for those with acne. It is recommended to wait until any active breakouts are gone before trying this treatment.

What Should I Expect During a Dermaplaning Facial?

Facial dermaplaning is a cosmetic procedure that involves gently scraping your face with a scalpel to remove the epidermis—your top layer of skin—and small hairs.

At the appointment, a doctor or aesthetician will gently pull your skin tightly and lightly while gliding the blade in an upward motion using delicate, feathering strokes. During a dermaplaning session your Retuva professional (licensed professional) uses a medical-grade scalpel to scrape across the surface of the skin.

For the best exfoliation results, it's smart to prep your skin by steaming your face—either as part of your in-office treatment or with an at-home steaming method, like hopping in a hot shower—before a dermaplaning session. The heat will loosen dirt and sebum and help to remove the dead skin cells easier. It also makes the skin more pliable, softer, and the vellus (aka peach fuzz) hairs easier to remove.

You should hold off on dermaplaning if you have a tan, sunburn, active acne, a flaring rosacea breakout, or an inflammatory skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis, as the procedure can worsen these issues.

Dermaplaning usually takes 10 to 20 minutes and can be done as a stand-alone option or as part of a facial.

What Should I Do After My Dermaplaning Facial?

It's important to protect your skin from the sun right after a dermaplaning procedure, as it can make the skin more photosensitive. It is  also recommended to avoid the use of makeup for up to 24 hours after a procedure.

You'll want to keep moisturizing for a couple of weeks too. Since the skin cells in the epidermis take about 14 days to turn over (or up to 40 to 50 days as you age) and create a new outer layer of skin, it's important to moisturize your face to replenish the barrier of the skin that was just removed. We also recommend being cautious of retinol and glycolic acids as the exfoliation exposes a new layer of sensitive skin.

What is a Photofacial (Photo Rejuvenation)?

Advanced skin treatment that uses intense pulses of light to treat skin discoloration, fine lines, and broken capillaries. IPL (intense pulse light) Photofacials work by stimulating cell rejuvenation and collagen production. As a building block for your skin, collagen is a protein that is responsible for its elasticity and smooth supple quality. However, collagen production naturally slows with age. As a result IPL Photofacials help to reinvigorate your skin and produce a youthful appearance, diminishing the presence of fine lines and wrinkles.
